Plattepalooza planned this weekend at the mountain
Roxbury — Plattekill Mountain will host the second annual count-down-to-winter celebration festival, ‘Plattepalooza’ at the mountain on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9.
Last year the event brought out skiers, non-skiers, mountain bikers, leaf peepers, young and old, all for a good time. This year the event has been further expanded and will be featuring additional activities including geocaching contests (scavenger hunts) and a dunk house booth plus an added array of artists, jewelers, craft vendors and antiques. You’ll also find fresh fall produce and the ski patrol will be offering free blood pressure screenings.
For the kids, they’ll be face painting, pumpkin painting, temporary tattoos and a kids’ bounce house among other activities.
The main event will once again surround a big ski and bike swap sale run by the resort’s volunteer ski patrol as a fund-raising effort that has taken on a new twist. Last year proceeds from the swap went to the mountain’s volunteer patrol. This year the patrol will instead host the event with 50 percent of proceeds going to local community hurricane relief efforts.
The mountain is accepting items for the swap sale starting Wednesday, Oct. 5 through the weekend and resort patrollers hope the cause will motivate people to bring up their used skis, boards, boots, bikes and apparel they don’t use anymore and maybe even trade it in for something else.
This event will also provide an outlet for people to sell their used equipment and purchase items at a low cost alternative to paying retail prices for new items.
Also, new this year the mountain has added an array of microbrews to sample from local breweries and the Plattekill food service team will be serving up locally grown Catskill cuisine, homemade soups, German fare and more. Live music will be featured on the deck both days, with Blues Maneuver on Saturday from 1-5 p.m. and The Decoys on Sunday from 12-4 p.m.
The lifts will operate all weekend for scenic fall-foliage chair lift sky rides and mountain biking. They’ll be plenty of mountain biking action with a downhill race scheduled for Sunday at 11a.m.
All activities for weekend begin at 11a.m. and admission is free.
