Patti Austin, Scofield/Lovano Quartet close out Belleayre Jazz Series Weekend
Highmount – The soaring vocals of Grammy-winning artist Patti Austin on Saturday, Aug. 7 and the organic rhythms of the John Scofield/John Lovano Quartet on Friday, Aug. 6 will close the Catskill Mountain Jazz Series at the Belleayre Music Festival. The shows begin at 8 p.m.
Patti Austin’s powerfully expressive voice has brought her cross-genre success that has lasted for over half a century. At Belleayre, she will perform songs from her Grammy-nominated 2002 album, “For Ella,” in honor of her favorite female jazz vocalist. Patti will showcase the characteristic creativity and subtle nuance for which she has been so highly praised.
After eight nominations in the category, Patti won her first Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her 2007 album “Avant Gershwin,” which further solidified her freshly re-defined musical style.
Reviewing her 2008 show at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual spring gala, The New York Times extolled Patti’s “confident, full-bodied performance” and for her sharpened Ella Fitzgerald-esque vocal technique.
The second weekend of the series gets underway on Friday, Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. when the John Scofield/Joe Lovano Quartet puts a buzz in the air in the intimate setting of the Belleayre Jazz Club.
Grammy award-winning tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano and maestro jazz guitar virtuoso John Scofield are reuniting for the first time in 20 years for one of the most exciting jazz collaborations ever presented. Joe Lovano and John Scofield are two of the most lauded artists in contemporary jazz.
With his distinctive diversity of post-bop, funk-edged jazz and R&B, John Scofield has prominently led his own groups in the international jazz scene, recorded over 35 albums as a leader and collaborated with contemporary favorites and jazz legends like Miles Davis, Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden.
Known for both small and large group ensembles, Joe Lovano stands out as one of the most successful saxophonists in jazz. He has distinguished himself for some three decades as a prescient and path-finding force in the arena of creative music.
As a special thanks to jazz-lovers, anyone presenting a ticket stub from the first three jazz series club shows will receive half-price admission to the Patti Austin performance.
The Catskill Mountain Jazz Series is sponsored by the A. Lindsay & Olive B. O’Connor Foundation.
