'Paper Work' opens Saturday at Longyear

Margaretville — Opening this week on Friday, Aug. 23 at The Longyear Gallery is “PaperWork,” featuring works in various media including drawing, painting, and photography by gallery member Corneel Verlaan, accompanied by a group show of all Longyear Gallery artists. The artist’s reception will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 3 to 6 p.m.

Corneel Verlaan’s exhibit “PaperWork” is comprised of recent work, among which are aerial images, objects, symbols, and landscapes. As the artist notes, “I see aerial images as a vehicle for different vantage points, these images also relate to two dimensional space, maps, focus, color ranges, and a contemplative view.”

According to Verlaan, his drawings and paintings of objects “pay homage to decorative items that were highly prized in their time and give a snapshot of each object’s culture.”
His work with symbols can be seen as “pictograms, or universal shapes with meanings, the oldest type of writing, a kind of calligraphy.” His landscapes, he states, are thematically connected to the rest of his work.

Corneel Verlaan studied art at the Vrije Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, Netherlands before moving to the U.S. where he received an MFA from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Since then he has exhibited widely in the U.S., with numerous exhibitions throughout Delaware and Ulster counties since he moved to Bovina. He has been president of Seifert Verlaan Inc, International Fine Arts Shipping, NYC and Bovina, since 1979.
Corneel Verlaan’s show “PaperWork” and the Longyear Gallery artists’ group show will be open from Friday, Aug. 23 through Monday, Sept. 16. Longyear Gallery is located Upstairs at The Commons, 785 Main Street, Margaretville. Gallery hours are Friday through Monday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by appointment.
