Motorcyclist dies of injuries after crash near Grand Gorge
By Brian Sweeney
A 55-year-old New Windsor man was killed Sunday afternoon in a motorcycle crash on Route 30 near Grand Gorge.
Natale Daltilio, a member of the Outriders motorcycle club, was riding with a group of about a dozen motorcyclists when he tried to avoid another rider who had fallen. After Mr. Daltilio hit the brakes, his bike turned into the guardrails, causing him to be thrown from the vehicle. He was transported to Margaretville Hospital by the Grand Gorge Emergency Squad, but was pronounced dead as the result of massive chest trauma.
The accident took place at 2:45 p.m. near Conro’s turn. Roxbury Constable Steve Williamson investigated the crash. He said the incident began when Wesley A. Woodwart, 66, of Pine Bush drifted off the right side of the road and struck some lose gravel, causing his motorcycle to crash into the guardrails. He was thrown from the bike and wound up in the northbound lane, where Mr. Daltilio swerved in an effort to miss him.
Mr. Woodwart suffered a broken foot, dislocated shoulder and a broken rib. He was transported to the Margaretville Hospital.
Roxbury Ambulance Squad members assisted at the scene and two helicopters were summoned.
Constable Williamson said the Outriders club has been riding together for many years.
He said that no tickets have been issued. The investigation is continuing, Constable Williamson said.
