MMH Auxiliary aims for 1,000 members
The Auxiliary of Margaretville Memorial Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Center kicked off its 2008 Membership Drive on May 8 and the group has a goal of signing up 1,000 members by year’s end.
The Membership Drive got underway at the same time that the auxiliary held its annual brunch to thank members for their long hours of volunteer efforts. The brunch was held at Mountainside’s Club Med with approximately 50 members in attendance.
Carey Wagner, chairman of the MMH Board of Directors, and Ed Morache, CEO, were guest speakers at the event. They provided updates regarding the health care campus and thanked the auxiliary members for their tireless dedication.
As part of the Membership Drive, it was announced that Joan Cogan, owner Cornerstone Health & Fitness in Arkville, has partnered with the organization by donating $2 for each auxiliary member who signs up for membership at her gym.
“We have had more than 1,000 members signed up in the past and we look forward to reaching that goal again this year,” remarked John Riedl, chairperson.
“The hospital is very important to this community and support by becoming an auxiliary member is very much appreciated. We have non-active members as well as active members,” he added.
Anyone is welcome to join the auxiliary for as little as $5 for a year’s membership. Higher donation amounts are also welcome. Auxiliary members are also invited to volunteer at events sponsored by the organization.
To join the auxiliary, contact any auxiliary member or drop dues with Betty DeSilva at the Margaretville Village Office from Monday-Wednesday. There will also be sign-up booths set up this summer at various locations in area communities, including the Pakatakan Farmers’ Market, at post offices and in front of the A&P in Margaretville.
The auxiliary has donated more than $15,000 since January 2008 for items such as defibrillators for Margaretville and Roxbury Family Health Centers, signage for the hospital van and including $3,000 for the Mountainside Residential Care Center’s Sunshine Fund. During a typical year, the auxiliary donates more than $60,000 to the hospital and Mountainside.
New York State has more than 75,000 health care auxilians who initiate, fund, and volunteer for a wide variety of patient and family care services-from outpatient clinics to intensive care units. They sponsor health fairs, blood banks, and wellness lecture series; raise funds for hospital and nursing home equipment; and organize and underwrite outreach programs in their communities.
Margaretville Memorial Hospital is a 15-bed acute care facility. The health care campus also includes Mountainside Residential Care Center, an 82-bed long-term care home. For additional information, please call 845 586-2631.
