MCS tennis team clinches league crown
The Margaretville Central School varsity tennis team finished its regular season with two wins and won the Delaware League with a 9-2 record overall.
Last week Tuesday the Devils beat Roxbury at home 5-2 followed by a 6-1 win, also at home, over Davenport on Thursday. Andersen Morse, (8-3 for the season) defeated both competitors last week 9-1 and number two seed Dante Tarantini (9-2 for the season) was also a winner shadowing his co-captain’s performance by going 9-1 in both of his matches.
Third seed Josh Rodriguez (season record 6-2) was also triumphant although in tougher matches with a closely fought 9-6 win over Jon Dykstra of RCS and 10-8 win against Nic Brown of Davenport.
Co-captain Jessica Srp, preparing for her fourth year playing doubles at league meet, where she is a three-time defending champion, was successful with partner Michelle O’Reilly 9-1 over RCS and at fourth seed she also won 9-2 defeating CVCS player Megan Hotaling. In singles play Srp, a senior, has an 8-2 record. O’Reilly(3-5 for the year at singles, 2-0 at doubles) was less successful at singles dropping her match to CVCSs Brad Teator 2-9.
Other doubles matches last week included Billy Svoboda and Holly MacDonald (6-1 for the season as partners) winning 9-7 over Davenport’s number one doubles team of Zach Consler and Ben Rogers while Bob Miller and Kory Ancona teamed up to defeat the second seed team of Michael Zimmerman and Amber Roe 9-5. Miller was less successful against RCS dropping his match with partner Matthew Gray 1-9 to Tiffany Faulkner and Kaitlin Brew.
Tennis sectionals will be held this Thursday at SUNY Delhi; participating for MCS will be Andersen Morse and Dante Tarantini in singles along with Srp and Svoboda in doubles play.
