MCS Tennis repeats as league co-champs

By John Bernhardt
For the third consecutive season, the Delaware League regular season tennis race has ended in a tie. Margaretville and Windham finished deadlocked at the top of the standings with identical 10-2 records. The championship draw was Margaretville’s second shared crown in the last three campaigns.

Fourth-year Margaretville coach Jim Owdienko gets great mileage from his doubles teams. Seniors Garrett Johnson and Adam VanValkenburg make a seasoned tennis pair completing their fourth season as a Blue Devil combo. Dabbed the ‘Court Comics’ the Margaretville duo finished a sparkling campaign with a 9-1 record.

Equally as effective are Mike Conroy and Yair Sanchez. Conroy, a sophomore, and Sanchez, a freshman, compete hard and give the Blue Devils a boost in the second doubles slot. The younger doubles pair finished with an identical 9-1 slate.

James Warner leads the Margaretville singles core in the number one slot. Warner, a sophomore, anchors Margaretville’s singles play. Quick and strategic, Warner has a shot at the singles league title to be decided at Total Tennis in Saugerties next week.

Junior Dylan Shaffer is becoming a force for Margaretville in the number two spot. “Dylan has some natural tennis talent and is improving every week,” noted Owdienko.

Two seniors, both relatively new to the sport, fill the number three and four spots. Athletic and competitive, Iso Desic and Peter Celia add depth to the roster.

Brandon Belaski rounds out the Margaretville single’s core. Owdienko likes what he sees from the Blue Devil sophomore, noting great overall improvement throughout the year.

Next up for the Blue Devils, Section IV play. Margaretville will test their skills on a bigger stage in Delhi on Thursday. Tuesday’s Delaware League Tournament at Total Tennis was washed out and will be rescheduled for sometime next week.
