Marie Shafer

Marie L. Shafer, 90, of Margaretville died March 11, 2013.

She was born May 16, 1922 in Sayerville, NJ, the daughter of George and Augusta Long.
After graduating from St. Peter’s High School in New Brunswick, NJ in 1940, Marie was an optical fire control technician for the U.S. Government at the Rairtan Arsenal in Metuchen, NJ. It was during this time that she met Robert W. Shafer of Roxbury. They were married May 14, 1944 in New Brunswick, NJ.

After the war they settled in Margaretville.
Marie was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Catskill 3500 Hiking Club (#287), and a ham radio operator (KE2KR). She was one of the founders of the Margaretville Radio Club. Along with her daily walks, she enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting, and crocheting.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bob on September 17, 2001 and by her brother, George Long and her sister, Ruth Bellante.

Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Shafer of Hamburg and Joan and her husband Thomas Roberts of Englewood, FL. Also surviving are a brother, Joseph Long of Somerset, NJ, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville. The Rev. Paul Catena will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marie’s name may be made to Delaware County Senior Meals or Margaretville Hospital.
