Marguerite Bender

Marguerite (Higinson) Bender, passed peacefully with her son, daughter, and pastor by her side on Monday, August 28, 2012 at the age of 90 at her home in Weston, CT.

Marguerite was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1922 in Hillsdale, NJ. She was the daughter of the late Walter Higinson and the late Margaret (Brogeler) Higinson.

Marguerite lived in Hillsdale for 52 years. Marguerite was the VP, treasurer and co-owner of Bender’s Service Station on Broadway in Hillsdale. In addition she was avidly involved through the years in stock car racing, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hillsdale Volunteer Fire Department, and as a chaperon and seamstress for the Valley Grenadiers Drum & Bugle Corps.

She moved to her country home in Halcott Center in 1974. She became the first woman town clerk of Halcott Center in 1984. She moved to Connecticut to live with her daughter and her family in 1996. Marguerite would spend her summers in Margaretville, which she looked forward to so much. Marguerite always loved children and continued to be active with each of her grand children and their activities through the years. She loved to crochet, make quilts, and sew.

Marguerite is survived by her children and their spouses, William and Lori Bender of Tehachapi, CA, Warran and Donna Bender of Margaretville, Marcey Bender-Trinka and Robert Trinka of Weston, CT; daughter-in-law, Kit Carson of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; her grandchildren, Wayne Bender, Jeremy Bender, Ryon Bender, Martine Trinka and Bryce Trinka and great-grandchildren, Hailey Bender and Ethan Bender. She is also survived by many persons who lovingly called her mom in New Jersey and New York throughout the years.

She was pre-deceased by her former husband of 33 years, William Bender and a brother, Walter Higinson II.

A private memorial service will be held at the Bender home in Margaretville in September. A life celebration in which she took part was previously held on August 18, 2012 in Weston, CT.
Her family wishes to thank the thoughtful and loving nurses and aides of the Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County who so lovingly cared for her in her home.
