Margaretville tennis squad ties for league title
The Margaretville tennis team posted a 4-3 win over the visiting Wildcats of Hunter-Tannersville on Monday to earn a share of the Delaware League title. Margaretville and Hunter each finished the regular season with 8-2 records to share the top spot in the league.
In Monday’s match-up, Eric Reed and Sage Beemer won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches for the Blue Devils, respectively, while James Warner earned a win at No. 4 doubles for Margaretville. Tyler Smith and Michelle O’Reilly fell at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Margaretville’s doubles duo of Greg Lehn and Marcus Moore lost at first doubles to split the match and put the pressure on the Blue Devils’ second doubles team of Adam VanValkenburg and Garrett Johnson.
VanValkenburg and Johnson posted a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles to earn the win for Margaretville and claim a share of the league title for the fourth time in six years.
The Roxbury Rockets fell to host Hunter-Tannersville on Friday to drop to 7-3. The Wildcats swept the singles matches while Roxbury earned wins in both doubles matches.
Roxbury’s Josh Riely and Tiffany Faulkner posted a 9-5 win over Hunter’s No. 1 doubles team, while Garrett Hinkley and Joe Smith earned a win at No. 2 doubles.
Roxbury’s Christian Schor fell at first singles, 9-3, while teammate Kevin Lutz fell at No. 2 singles, 10-8. Hunter’s Tucker Foti defeated Roxbury’s Jon Dykstra 9-5 at No. 3 singles while the Rockets’ Brittney Bell fell 9-1 at No. 4 singles.
