Margaretville Magic give Gilboa the boot in men's soccer
By Pete Palen
The Margaretville Magic bested Clark’s of Gilboa, 9-2, Monday night in the Minekill Adult Soccer League. A hotly contested opening stanza saw The Magic leading 3-1 at half time. Margaretville jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on successive goals by Mitch and Max Mead, and Ryan Pesa. Clark’s made a match of it just before the half, tallying on a re-directed shot off a corner kick.
Margaretville outplayed and wore down Clark’s in the second half. The Magic’s quick-passing style stressing movement and communication led to numerous scoring opportunities for Margaretville and they prevailed 9-2. Five players notched goals for The Magic. Mitch Mead’s shots found the back of the net three times, while Max Mead and Ryan Pesa scored twice. Jason Wickham and Josh Smith rounded out the Magic’s scoring with one goal apiece. The Margaretville defense was led by the strong play of former Delhi Bulldog Alex Throssell.
Wednesday’s action featured another close, hotly contested match between two young, strong teams. Margaretville defeated Austin’s of Middleburgh 9-2, but not before the valley boys of Middleburgh applied some first-half pressure, as The Magic was challenged in establishing a 4-2 lead at the break.
The Magic adapted to Austin’s up-tempo, pressure-offense forays by establishing a counter-attacking style in the second half. The Magic’s counter attacks, ultimately, frustrated and demoralized Middleburgh as Margaretville capitalized on takeaways and breakaways, as well as Magic, goalkeeper, Tom Vitro’s defensive prowess in nets as he stymied all Austin forays inside the 18 yard line.
Margaretville felt the pressure of the moment in the match, as they played with no substitutes; yet, once again, teamwork, experience, and savvy play prevailed in the 9-2 victory. Team captain Max Mead and 2007 MCS Blue Devil, Ryan Pesa led The Magic scoring with three goals apiece. Allen Reed tallied twice and Alex Throssell scored once.
