Margaretville Hospital offers state of the art services
Margaretville — Laboratory services at Margaretville Hospital continue to be enhanced with state-of-the-art equipment and expanded services.
The facility benefits from an arrangement in which LabCorp provides management services, but the lab continues to be maintained by the Hospital. This arrangement has been in effect for about 18 months.
“We are still the Margaretville Hospital Lab, but we are managed by LabCorp. This relationship allows us to take advantage of LabCorp’s ability to better understand regulations concerning the Lab which means better compliance with federal and local regulatory agencies. There is no way a small independent lab could keep up with the changing NYS Department of Health (DOH) regulations and Joint Commission standards. We’re too small for that,” added Ms. Skovsende.
LabCorp also provides us with the most up-to-date policies and procedures and reference information available. They allow us access to state-of-the art equipment/testing and provide us better pricing due to the buying power associated with LabCorp. They have also implemented a new state-of-the-art lab computer system. The hospital’s instruments are now linked to it, allowing for a seamless integration.
LabCorp’s computer system interfaces with the new electronic medical record system that was just implemented throughout HealthAlliance. This allows the hospital to be in compliance with the new federal mandate that all medical records must be electronically maintained.
Much to offer
“Even though we’re a small facility, we still have to be able to provide all services, and the arrangement with LabCorp allows us to do that,” stated Ms. Skovsende.
She pointed out that the lab provides a full-range of services, including: hematology, blood bank, urinalysis, phlebotomy and chemistry analysis. The lab’s services are wide-ranging, thanks to our collaboration with LabCorp.
“We perform many outpatient lab services for our local community members and our second home owners. We can perform the tests at the hospital and send the reports via computer directly to their physician,” Ms. Skovsende explained. Tests that cannot be completed in the hospital lab are transported to our affiliated LabCorp reference lab where the results are usually available within 24-48 hours.
Other members of the lab staff include Trudy Russell, Lovely Lee and Mike Josol, Technologists and Alice Curley, Phlebotomist. Ms. Skovsende said that all of the Technologists have at least the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree and are Certified Lab Technologists. Each Technologist is a “generalist,” qualified to perform the various functions of the department.
Ms. Skovsende said that as a New York State laboratory, we are rigorously tested three to four times a year to ensure that current standards of proficiency are being met. “We are also surveyed by the Department of Health and the Joint Commission,” the manager stated.
The Margaretville Hospital lab is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. for outpatients and is available 24/7 for inpatients and the Emergency Department.
Margaretville Hospital is located at 42084 State Highway 28, Margaretville. For additional information about the hospital’s lab services, please call 845 586-2631, extension 3127.
