Margaret “Peggy” Nydia Yost Pickhardt, 89, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville. She was born in Kensington, Philadelphia September 1, 1919, the only child of Sheridan W. and Catherine Coffee Yost.
She married returning World War II veteran Charles Pickhardt in 1945.
Margaret spent much of her life caring for others. A devoted daughter, she provided a home for her mother for 18 years while also raising three sons in Brewster. She had followed her mother into nursing and worked at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco and at Putnam Community Hospital. A nurse’s aide during the war, she briefly modeled as a pin-up girl for the ‘Vargas school’ of illustrators.
After she suffered a stroke, Margaret had come to live at Mountainside in 1995. She was well liked by the staff who came to appreciate her wonderful smile, strong opinions, and her fashion sense — she was never without necklace, earrings and a fresh coat of lipstick. She took great pleasure in visits from her grandson, enjoyed a memorable trip—her first flight—with son Vincent to his home in Michigan, and was grateful to be able to meet her two great-grandchildren.
Surviving are three sons, Carl Pickhardt of Halcottsville, Vincent Pickhardt of Beaver Island, Mich. and Wayne Pickhardt of Ossining; two grandchildren, Kimberly Gallaghe of Sherman, Conn. and Erik Galusha-Pickhardt of Margaretville. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Daniel and Morgan Gallagher.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Pickhardt in May 1976.
A memorial service will be held at Mountainside at a date to be determined. Margaret’s cremains will be interred in the spring at Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla.
Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
