March 11, 2009: Ready to serve as village mayor
To The Editor:
As one of the mayoral candidates in the impending Village of Fleischmanns election, I remind residents that it is their civic responsibility to get out and vote.
This country was founded on principles that allow the public to have choices and a voice in the process. Robert Hutchins, a famous educator and president of the University of Chicago, once wrote, “The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference and undernourishment.” With these words in mind I argue that your vote on the local level is perhaps more important than ever.
Fleischmanns, much like the region, is at a pivotal moment. Your participation, not only in the voting process, but the months and years to follow, will help shape the future of our community. I have been accused of “dreaming” but in fact, dreaming and feeling with your heart is part of the creative process that helps map the future.
Believing in dreams, empowering others to dream and having the energy and tenacity to see them to fruition is critical to Fleischmanns’ sustainability. One of the largest investments anyone can make in their community is the decision to make a stand, become rooted, and raise a family. I have chosen Fleischmanns as that community and I am ready to serve.
