Man claims bear attack near Andes

State Police are investigating a reported bear attack on a 16-year-old man near in the Town of Andes on Jan. 1. Brendan Porfido, a New Jersey resident, told police that he was walking in the woods with his two dogs near Tunis Lake about 10:15 p.m. when he came across a bear.
Mr. Porfido told police he attempted to flee from the bear. As he ran, Mr. Porfido said the bear struck the back of his coat and ripped it, before running into the woods.
Mr. Porfido suffered an abrasion to his right cheek. He declined medical attention.
The case has been turned over to Department of Environmental Conservation Officer Vern Bauer for investigation.
