Magic a winner over Roxbury in men's soccer
By Pete Palen
The Margaretville Magic kicked off their inaugural season in The Mine Kill Division of the Sears/Latte Lounge Men’s Adult Soccer League on July 10 with a 14-7 win against Roxbury. After a decade of play in the Oneonta Division of the league, including four straight championship match appearances, the 2007 Oneonta League Champs relished a change of scenery in 2008.
Roxbury gave The Magic all they could handle in the early going of the league opener, Wednesday night, as they rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match 3-3 midway through the opening period, before Margaretville surged to a comfortable 7-3 halftime lead on matching three-goal hat tricks by the Mead brothers, Max and Mitch.
The second half of the game saw The Magic continue to settle into the customary, one touch-quick passing style of play they prefer. The Magic’s passing prowess led to a number of scoring opportunities, as Margaretville increased its lead and prevailed by a final score of 14-7.
Mitch Mead’s four goals, Max Mead’s three tallies and Ryan Pesa’s two goals led Margaretville scoring. Brandan Pesa, Avery Meehan, Allen Reed, Josh Smith and Adam Hendricks added one goal each in the victory.
The Margaretville midfield was skillfully patrolled by Jason Wickham and Alex Throssell, while Tom Vitro had a solid opening match in goal. Roxbury was led by the solid midfield play Steven Hubbard and the quick ball-control of Jon Skipper.
The 2008 Margaretville Magic roster includes longtime team stalwarts captain Max Mead, Mitch Mead, Jason Wickham, Brandan Pesa and Tom Vitro and is bolstered by the return to Margaretville soccer of the Meehan brothers: Zak and Avery, as well as the addition of Adam Hendricks, Josh Smith, Ryan Pesa, Alex Throssell and Allen Reed.
