Lucy Benjamin

Lucy Benjamin, 97, of Academy Street, Pine Hill died Thursday evening, Feb.11, 2010 at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville with her family in attendance.  

She was a lifetime Catskill Mountains resident, having made her home in Pine Hill since the 1950s.  
She had worked with the Dammans at the Pine Hill Arms on Main Street in Pine Hill  for many years. She had been a Green Thumb Ladies Club member and was the consummate homemaker who had the talent and skills to cook, can vegetables, and bake pies beginning at age nine.  Her focus was always on her family.

    She was born June 23, 1912 in Jewett, daughter of the late Edgar and Christina Rivenburgh Higgins.

   Surviving are her daughter Lucille Myers of Pine Hill, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by her husband Melvin in 1985 and siblings Elsie Albert, Arthur, Richard, and Leonard Higgins.

A service to celebrate the life of Lucy Benjamin will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 16  at 10 a.m. with Rev. Ralph Darmstadt as celebrant.  Burial will be in the family plot at the Shandaken Rural Cemetery.  Friends were received on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main Street, Phoenicia.
