Leighton D. Hinkley, 82, a resident of Roxbury, died at his home on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013.
He was born on February 21, 1931 in Roxbury, the son of Harold and Ethel (Sanford) Hinkley.
Leighton married Joan Layman at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church in Roxbury on December 19, 1948.
Leighton attended Roxbury Central School. He was a self-employed carpenter and worked with his brothers on many construction projects in the area. He lived in Florida for 20 years and while there he worked as a heavy-equipment operator on many construction projects with the Operating Engineers Union.
He was a former member of the Roxbury Fire Department and Roxbury Rotary Club. Presently he was a member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, cutting firewood, gardening and most of all, helping friends and family.
Surviving are his wife, Joan Hinkley; daughters, Valarie Cowan and her husband, Doug, and Victoria Hinkley, and two sons, Timothy Hinkley and Scott Hinkley and his wife, Chris. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Ryan and Chamberlain Hinkley and Korey Holloway; sisters, Caroline Thompson, Shirley Kellerhouse, Edna Busier and brothers, Gary and Glenford Hinkley. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Calling hours were held at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013 from 6 until 8 p.m.
A funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury with the Rev Richard Dykstra officiating.
A committal services will be held at a later date.
