Kayaking club hosting races this weekend

The Kayak and Canoe Club of New York, a northeast regional kayaking club, will host its 42nd annual kayak and slalom races on the Esopus Creek the weekend of June 7 and 8.
Racing will start at noon on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday. The starting line will be at the Woodland Valley bridge, off Route 28, just north of Phoenicia.
The public is invited to watch the racers, in categories from novice to Olympic hopefuls, navigate the 20 slalom gates on the course. Brochures will be distributed describing all phases of “running the gates.”
Boat control, strategy and timing are the fundamentals used by the slalom racers as they navigate their boats through upstream and downstream gates. Scoring is done by taking a paddler’s total time on the course and adding time penalties for gates missed or gates touched.
