Kathryn Lawrence and John VanBenschoten
Kathryn Elizabeth Gillen Lawrence and John William VanBenschoten were united in marriage in a double ring ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Roxbury. The bride, daughter of Joan Lawrence-Bauer of Oliverea and JR Lawrence of Margaretville, wore a floor-length, ivory beaded gown by Oleg Cassini, an antique headpiece from the VanBenschoten family, and antique cameos from the Lawrence family as she was given in marriage by her parents.
The bridegroom, son of Eric and Sally VanBenschoten of New Hope, PA, wore a cutaway morning coat and period top hat and was accompanied by best man Rico Balzano, friend of the bridegroom, and groomsmen Ted Weber, friend of the bridegroom, and Jeff and Eric VanBenschoten, brothers of the bridegroom. Matron of honor was a friend of the bride, Iris Mead, and bridesmaids were Danielle Ballard and Karen French, cousins of the bride, and Karen Santasiere, a college friend.
The Very Reverend Robert Purcell officiated at the noon wedding Mass where readings were offered by Heather and Kristin VanBenschoten, sisters-in-law of the bridegroom, and Ryan Munro, cousin of the bride. Kent Brown served as organist, with accompaniment for the processionals, “Ashokan Farewell” and “Lover’s Waltz,” from Evan Shultis and Ira McIntosh.
Horse drawn carriages took the couple and their wedding party to a reception in Kirkside Park immediately following the ceremony. Tents, marquees and table settings were provided by Savon, hors d’oeuvres and dinner by Blue Mountain Bistro, flowers by the Flower Shop, music by Blues Maneuver and photography by Matt Gillis Photography.
A highlight of the reception was a musical performance by the bride and bridegroom of Johnny Cash and June Carter-Cash’s “Jackson.”
Following a honeymoon in Nova Scotia, Mr. VanBenschoten, who is employed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in New Paltz and Mrs. VanBenschoten, who is employed by Mang Insurance Agency, will reside in Margaretville where he serves as deputy mayor and she is a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals.
