Joyce St. George to receive Citizenship Award

Joyce St. GeorgeJoyce St. GeorgeMargaretville — The Margaretville Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Center Board of Directors has selected Joyce St. George of New Kingston to receive  the Keene A. Roadman Hospital Citizenship Award. The award will be presented on October 16 at the Harvest Moon Ball which is sponsored by the Auxiliary of Margaretville Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Center.

Ms. St. George has served as a member of the Margaretville Hospital Board and Mountainside Residential Care Center, and held the position of board chair from 2005-2007. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Health Alliance Planning. She works locally as a mediator for the NYS Unified Court System and provides training in conflict resolution and leadership to schools, communities and small businesses.

During the 1970s, Ms. St. George served as the first female investigator for the NYS Office of the Special Prosecutor - a state police agency established to root out corruption of police, judges, attorneys and others areas of criminal justice in New York City.

She was an expert witness on sexual assault and domestic violence for the Queens District Attorney’s Special Victims Office in the 1980s and helped the US Department of Justice intervene in race-related conflicts between police and communities of color.

Ms. St. George is a founder and co-director of PACT Training, an internationally recognized organization renown for its innovative drama-based experiential training methods.

She holds a BA from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and an MA from New York University, and serves as a consultant for health care organizations, police agencies, communities and private industry on organizational and human development, leadership, cultural competence, workforce diversity, service excellence, conflict resolution and violence reduction.

Ms. St. George also teaches graduate courses on leadership, human resources and related topics at New York University. She is also the author of several articles and manuals on leadership, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and training, including an op-ed in The New York Times, and a novel Perfect Cover, based on her previous undercover experiences.

Ms. St. George has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including NPR's "All Things Considered," the CBS Charles Osgood radio show, the NBC "Today" show and others. She has had her work featured in newspapers, magazines and professional journals.

She is active in the local theater scene, acting in plays and teaching comedy, improvisation and acting.

Joined by her husband, Frank Canavan, she continues use her law enforcement and crisis management experience by training police in domestic violence investigations, physicians and nurses in sexual assault intervention and business managers in recognizing and preventing workplace violence.

Of all her accomplishments, Ms. St. George said that what fills her with pride the most is her lifelong partnership with her husband, the love of her stepdaughter Kathleen and grandchildren, her enduring friendships, and her loyal, devoted and always frisky horses.
