Joyce Purchell

Joyce Elizabeth (Newman) Purchell, 88, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2012 (Memorial Day) at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville where she resided for the past three years.
Joyce was the daughter of Ralph and Elizabeth Newman of Sunbury, PA where she was born on September 4, 1923. She graduated from Sunbury High School in 1940 and received her nursing degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. She joined the U.S. Army after graduation in 1944 where she served as an evacuation nurse with the 5th Army Division during the European campaign of WWII. Two of her brothers served in the military and her father was a decorated Marine veteran from World War I.

After an honorable discharge as a First Lieutenant in May of 1946 she continued her nursing career at Margaretville Hospital where she was employed for over 20 years. During that time she married Richard Purchell of Roxbury on August 22, 1948 and continued that union until her passing just short of their 64th wedding anniversary. She was involved in many local activities with her four children including 4-H, Cub Scouts, and the Methodist Women’s Group of the Roxbury Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Richard of Roxbury; three sons, Alan Purchell and his wife Marie of Manassas, VA, Wayne Purchell of Roxbury, and David Purchell and his wife Penny of Atlanta, GA along with their sons; Morgan, Evan, Aaron, and his wife Markie, and Andrew, all of Georgia. Also Max Dixon, another grandchild through Linda Purchell Dixon (deceased) of Belleview, WA. Joyce is also survived by several cousins and their families in Pennsylvania.
As per her request, her remains will be cremated. There will be calling hours and a memorial service on Thursday May 31, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. until service time at 6:00 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
