John Kusen, 89, died peacefully at home Sunday, June 28, 2009 in Massapequa in the loving care of his family and Good Shepherd Hospice.
He was born in East Meadow.
John served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the Pacific during WWII.
John had been a frequent visitor and avid golfer, fisherman and hunter in the Catskill area. He vacationed in Fleischmanns from 1963 until last year when his health began to fail.
He was a founding member of the West Enders Hunting Club on Halcott Mountain and was captain of the Golf Team at Hempstead HS.
John was a member of the East Meadow and Massapequa Fire Departments with combined service of over 60 years serving as Captain of Company 1 in Massapequa from 1962-63. He owned and operated John’s Floorcraft Service for over 30 years.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Mary Jean (Goodman) Kusen and his son, Gary Kusen of Massapequa and Fleischmanns.
He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Emma; his older brother, Joseph and his twin brother, Peter who died June 13 of this year.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Massapequa Funeral Home.
The Massapequa Fire Department stood honor guard at the funeral home and John was taken for one last ride by his fire company to Calverton National Cemetery where he was laid to rest with military funeral honors.
