Joan Asher, 84, formerly of Dry Brook Road, Arkville, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital where she had been employed from 1949 to 1999.
She was born August 27, 1925 in Barberton, Ohio the daughter of the late Allen and Ada Haynes Crumling.
She attained her LPN degree from Montiforie Hospital in 1955, and went to school nights at Ulster County Community College to earn her RN in 1971. She was operating room supervisor at Margaretville hospital for 27 years, and in charge of obstetrics and deliveries for 12 years.
Joan had been an area resident since 1946, and an avid reader who enjoyed travel. She was a people person who was compassionate, understanding and simply a wonderful nurse.
She was predeceased by her first husband of more than 60 years, John B. Asher, in 2004. Surviving are her husband, Jefferson Phillips, of Kirkside in Roxbury whom she married in 2007; a son, Jon and his wife Marilee of Fleischmanns; three grandchildren, Travis (Denise) Asher of Dry Brook, Erin (Gale) Neale of Walton and Carrie Asher of Kingston. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Brynna Asher.
A service to celebrate the life of Joan was held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main St., Phoenicia.
Burial is in Bedell Cemetery in Red Kill.
