Jefferson nips in MCS baseball play
Defending champion Jefferson scored four times to break open a 5-5 tie and then held on to squeak past visiting Margaretville, 9-8, in the Delaware League opener for both teams Monday afternoon. Four Jefferson base hits, the big blow a two-run Jimmy Reese single, proved to be Margaretville’s undoing.
Both teams plated two runs in the first inning with Jefferson scoring once in the second to take a 3-2 lead. The Blue Devils surged ahead by scoring twice in the third but Jefferson answered with two runs of their own to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth. A single Blue Devils’ tally knotted the score at 5-5 heading into Jefferson’s decisive fifth.
Margaretville rallied to score three times in their final at bat but ended one run shy, falling 9-8.
Blue Devils’ catcher Cooper Reither had a perfect day at the plate going four for four and knocking in three runs. Matt VanValkenburg doubled and scored three times and Kyle Short had a pair of hits and scored a pair of runs for the Blue Devils.
The top of the Jefferson batting order was productive with the first three batters scoring six of Jefferson’s nine runs. Leadoff hitter John Quagliano was hit by pitches twice and scored both times. Austin Clayton worked two walks, scoring both times, and Nick Smith had a single, triple and sacrifice fly ball in the three hole. Smith racked up three RBIs.
Margaretville hosts Roxbury in a non-league contest this afternoon then travels to Roxbury for a DL matchup of Friday.
