Jazz percussion workshop at Belleayre

Highmount —   A free Jazz Improvisation Percussion Workshop for students, taught by three of the genre’s rising stars, is being offered this summer by the Belleayre Music Festival.
The first annual Student Jazz Workshop, to be held August 9 and 10, provides an outstanding opportunity to study with one of the most important young artists in jazz, vibraphonist Stefon Harris.

Two-day training
The program offers serious music students a two-day emersion in jazz improvisation with Chris Earley and Mike Treat, followed by a master class with Harris and public performance at Belleayre Music Festival’s renowned Jazz Club.

The workshop is open to students ages 12-17. Percussive experience is not required, but a school music teacher or other music instructor must recommend students for acceptance into the program.
Instruction and the final performance will take place in the Overlook Lodge at Belleayre Mountain at 181 Galli Curci Road, Highmount.

The sessions run from noon to 5 p.m. each day with the master class starting at 5 p.m. on August 10.  The performance with Stefon Harris follows that evening in the Belleayre Jazz Club.

The Belleayre Conservatory (which operates the Belleayre Music Festival), is sponsoring the workshop in partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Woodstock Chimes Fund and the SUNY Ulster County Music Department.
