James Benjamin McMann, 89, of Greenport, N.Y. died there Friday, Nov. 27, 2009. He was born in Greenport Nov. 18, 1920 to William and Jessie (Benjamin) McMann. After graduating from Greenport High School, he attended Ithaca College and Albany State.
Mr. McMann served in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of ensign.
He married Shirley George in DeLand, Fla. on December 26, 1947.
Mr. McMann worked for Fleischmanns High School as a physical education teacher and basketball coach and later for the Bayport-Blue Point School District as an elementary physical education teacher and high school varsity basketball coach. He was also the longtime captain of the sailing yacht Georjabelle.
He was a past member of the Sayville Yacht Club and a member of the Chinese Yacht Club in Greenport and Orient Yacht Club. According to his family, he enjoyed sailing and making small ship models.
Surviving are his wife; his children, Carol Ogle of Blue Point, Kathryn Leis of Sayville and William of Hightstown, N.J. Also surviving are four grandchildren.
The family received visitors November 29 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
Funeral services were conducted November 30 at Greenport United Methodist Church by Pastor Young Kirl Kim.
Interment followed at Sterling Cemetery.
