Ilse Sagan

Ilse Beyermann Kaplan Sagan, 86, of Arkville died March 26, 2012 at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.

Ilse was born October 10, 1925 in the Harz Mountains of Germany to Frederich Wilhelm and Else (Ohle) Beyermann.

She became the first German war bride when she married American GI Herman R. Kaplan in 1946. She came to the U.S. on March 27, 1947, quickly learned to speak English, passed the citizenship test and very proudly became an American citizen. She was a staunch patriot for 65 years and revered her right to vote.

She was also very proud of her German heritage and enjoyed being an active member of the German-American Club. This wonderful group of people in the Northern Catskills became her close friends, especially Inge, Marianna, Hedy and many more.

She was a devoted wife to Kappy and a loving mother to Terry and Veronica (Cookie).
She adored her grandchildren, Kelly, Kasey, Eric, and Krista.
She is also survived by her brother, Wilhelm.

Her beauty, style, and grace were legendary, but her love of life, vitality, generosity, and
empathy gained her the love and respect of so many, on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. She was a trusted and loyal friend for all of her life. She will be profoundly missed and never forgotten.
A memorial service for Isle will be held on Sunday April 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Donations in her memory may be made to The American Cancer Society.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
