Ice is Nice!

Winter Fun at Hanford Mills’ Ice FestivalWinter Fun at Hanford Mills’ Ice Festival

The Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith attracted a large crowd Saturday for their annual ice-harvest festival. Ice cut from the millpond is stored in an icehouse on the property and then used for making ice cream in the summer. Above, Roxbury residents Madison Tobin, 8, with her hands on an ice spud, and her brother Cyrus, 5, looking into the water, had fun cutting blocks of ice from the pond. Cyrus’ mother, Antha Bouton, keeps a close eye on him to prevent an unplanned polar swim. Foot-thick ice made the millpond safe for the annual festival. — Photo by Dick Sanford
