Horseshoe tournament raises funds for Roxbury Youth Soccer

By Brian Sweeney
The 10th annual Pete Wright Memorial Horseshoe Tournament was held Saturday adjacent to the BUN N’ CONE restaurant in Margaretville.

As has been the tradition each year, proceeds from the tournament were donated to a local nonprofit youth organization. This year’s recipient was the Roxbury Youth Soccer Program.
The tournament started in honor of Pete Wright, a strong supporter of the Delaware and Ulster Horseshoe League and team sponsor at the former Frontier Lounge in Dunraven. When Pete passed away, his family established the tournament as a means of helping to fund youth organizations in the area.

Twenty-four players entered Saturday’s tournament, paying an entry fee and vying for trophies. The entry fees and proceeds from a 50-50 drawing are applied towards the annual scholarship fund.
Chris Mattice was invited to the award ceremony and accepted the donation on behalf of the Roxbury Youth Soccer Program.

The top finishers in the tournament included: Jay Weaver, Bob Woody, Dori Buerge, Bill Day, Joe VanBlarcom, Jeremiah Roberts, Tom Lemondes, Dave Watters, Leroy Effner, Scott Hobbie, Clint Goodchild and Jack Goodchild.

BUN N’ CONE proprietors Lilly Piacquadio and Jerry Fronckowiak volunteered their time cooking for the tournament barbecue and also offered special rates beverages for participants.
Bob Armstrong of Andes donated the tournament trophies.

Previous recipients of donations from the Pete Wright Memorial Horseshoe Tournament include: Andes Little League, Fleischmanns Youth Soccer, Village of Margaretville Ice Skating Rink, Margaretville Youth Soccer, Margaretville Central School Science Research Program, Andes Central School Girls’ Basketball Camp, Stamford Central School Ski Club, the Margaretville Student Travel Club and the Margaretville Central School Booster Club.

Dori Buerge, who assists with the event named in honor of her father, said that individuals involved with area youth organizations are invited to send her a letter outlining their group’s needs and how their group could benefit from a donation from subsequent tournaments.

Letters may be sent to: Dori Buerge, 35665 State Highway 30, Margaretville, NY 12455
