Last-minute gifts for the sportsmen sportswomen on your list
Are you one of those who waits till the 11th hour to do your holiday shopping? Take heart, there is still time to find just the right present for those on your list who love to spend time afield – whether fishing, hunting, hiking, biking or bird watching.
One of the best new items to come on the market in recent years are Onos Polarized Performance Sunglasses. I’ve recently gotten a pair from their newest line, the Ernest Hemingway Collection, and I think they should top anyone’s Christmas list. I opted for the style with magnification (listed as “Polarized Low Reader”) a sort of bi focal sunglass that fits well and is fantastic for close work, especially while fishing – no more fumbling for your glasses when you need to switch to a size #20 or smaller fly (and wasting valuable time while the fish are rising!) or having to fold down those magnifying visors while tying on new tippet.
The Ono lenses are optically clear when compared to standard lenses; the high quality is immediately noticeable. In addition, they are lightweight even in the larger models, such as the Cojimar PLR model I chose. With 100 percent polarized lenses, Ono promises 100 percent protection from the harmful UVA/A+AVB rays, offering a welcome relief from glare. And in the magnifiers, the integrated reader system (which is available in 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 strength) is positioned low on the lens for active use and an unobstructed view. They are also available in your prescription. The design of the Ernest Hemingway collection is classic with a modern twist, the shapes and colors of the Cojimar PLR, such as the brown plaid I chose, are strikingly beautiful. In addition, the memory-flex frames feature Italian spring flex hinges, rubber nonslip nose pads and a rubber brow for shock absorption. Onos retail for $189.99 and are well worth the cost; they would make a much-appreciated gift for that very special outdoors enthusiast. For more information, please visit www.onos.com.
As we are winding down the big game hunting season, guns are very much in forefront of your favorite hunter’s mind. Dave Budin of Del Sports, Inc., Margaretville, said that he is carrying a new and exciting product that is sure to be a big hit – “the hottest item coming out of the store this season is the “Circuit Judge,” a .410/.45Colt revolving shotgun/rifle from Taurus/Rossi – very unique in that it is constructed with a rifle bore that can also be used as a shotgun. It’s so new, everybody’s gotta have it!” Other items that are popular gifts are optics – such as binoculars and riflescopes. And also selling like hotcakes are the black powder muzzle loading rifles, especially now, in the midst of the late Muzzle loading season which opened December 12 and runs through December 20. (During this special season, hunters are allowed in most deer management units to take a deer of either sex.)
Al’s Sports Store, Downsville, has an array of suitable offerings, from warm woolen coats, hats, gloves and other outerwear, to fishing and hunting gear, as well as assorted gifts from the Catskills, as does the Tremperskill Country Store, where Candy is sure to offer you a cup of coffee! Things to consider for outdoor enthusiasts include a new thermos, hot seat, warm boots and ice fishing gear – tipups, jigs and the like.
Please remember to visit all our local shops during this holiday season as you will find friendly and helpful shop keepers (many of whom are your neighbors) who would appreciate your business during these hard times. No long lines, no long drives and a nice feeling of camaraderie when you shop locally.
Wishing all the readers of the Catskill Mountain News a joyous holiday season, and a very happy and healthy New Year.
