Herman Quick
Herman Alton Quick, 79, of Leggs Mill Road, Lake Katrine, died Friday, Feb 19, 2010 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born May 10, 1930 in Liebhart. He resided in Allaben and Chichester for most of his life before moving to Lake Katrine in 2001.
Herman served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, having spent most of that time in both Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska.
In his earlier years, he was employed as a logger and mechanic for various Catskill Mountain operators. Prior to his retirement in 1993, he was employed as a mechanic, and then foreman for almost 21 years, for the Town of Shandaken Highway Department from 1973 to 1993. His department supervisors included Archie Alley, Ed Ocker and Lenny Van-Valkenburgh.
Herman loved to tinker on small engines and enjoyed NASCAR racing.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Eva Sweet Quick, of Lake Katrine; daughter and son-in-law, Rosetta L. and Dean E. Close of Lanesville, son and daughter-in-law, James H. and Tracy Quick of Phoenicia, daughter, Melanie A. Quick of Kingston, daughter-in-law, Cheryl L. Lowe; brother, Harold C. Quick of Lanesville; sisters, Lauretta VanLeuvan of Lanesville, Rita M. Berryann of Mt. Tremper, Arline Schmiedel and Carol M. Berryann, both of Shandaken; three grandchildren, Kati and Pete Buccinna, Jimmy Quick and Christopher Farris; seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and special friends, Randy Ostrander and Dickie Merwin.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Wilson, Elijah Jr. and Artis Quick and sisters, Grace Vitarius, Esther Krom and Elaine Krom.
A service to celebrate the life of Herman was held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main St., Phoenicia with the Rev. David Houston as celebrant.
Spring burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Rural Cemetery, Rte. 28, Mt. Tremper.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Ulster Co. Hospice.
