Henry "Hank" Wern
Henry J. (Hank) Wern, 82, beloved husband and father, passed away Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009 from complications of Parkinson’s disease, at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.
He was born June 11, 1927 in New York City.
He grew up in New York City and Margaretville.
He married Helen Bock on April 22, 1956.
Hank managed F.W. Woolworth Department Stores on Long Island and New York City for 28 years. He loved the Catskills and took the opportunity to move his family here in 1974, when he and Helen bought the Margaretville Department Store, which they operated until it was sold in 1991.
Hank was always very community minded. He was a member of the Advisory Board for NBT Bank. He was one of the founding members and a past president of the MARK Board. He was a past president of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Board and he was an Elder of the Margaretville-New Kingston Presbyterian Church.
He was Masonically raised in Roome Lodge No. 746 in New York City. He was a member and Past Master of Masonic Lodge No. 389, AF&AM in Margaretville and District Deputy Grand Master for Delaware District. He was a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International, and a past president of the Margaretville Rotary Club.
Hank enjoyed reading, golfing, bowling and traveling.
Surviving are his wife, Helen and six children, Melanie Squires and her husband, John of Margaretville, Edward Wern and his wife, JaniRae of Monticello, Minn., Christl Johnson and her husband, Tim of Halcott Center, Katherine Allen and her husband, John of Ham Lake, Minn., Craig Wern of New York City and Linda Tapfar of Shelter Island; brothers, Jack Wern and his wife, Betty of Wading River and Fred Wern and his wife, Barbara of LaGrangeville. Also surviving are six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Katie Wern.
Calling hours will be Thursday, Dec. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11 at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Committal services will be held at a later date in the spring in the Sanford Cemetery, Margaretville.
Donations in memory of Henry Wern may be made to the Mountainside Residential Care Center or the Catskill Area Hospice.
