Harold R Mead
Harold R. Mead, 71, of Rotterdam entered into the arms of the Lord and his eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. He spent his last days at the Joan Nicole Prince Home in Scotia with the love of the wonderful staff and his wife and daughter.
Born August 29, 1941 in Margaretville, he was the son of the late William and Anna Mead. He graduated from Margaretville Central School where he was a basketball and soccer player.
Harold proudly served in the U.S. Navy. During his stay in the Navy, he was stationed in Hawaii and served on the U.S.S. Bonefish submarine. He successfully completed the submarine course, Electricians Mate, Class “A” Services School. He was employed with General Electric in Schenectady as a crane repair electrician, a position from which he retired.
He was a member of the Elks and Eagles Club in Rotterdam. Harold enjoyed bowling, golf and billiards. He was very musically talented, playing an array of instruments including the guitar, harmonica, banjo, piano and violin. In his later years, Harold enjoyed puzzles and books about submarines. He will be remembered for his sense of humor.
In addition to his beloved wife, Marie, he is survived by his loving daughter, Nicole Newcomb, and her husband, David Newcomb; three sisters, Shirley Grant, Ellen Gray and Ginny Misner; and one brother, Jerry Mead. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald Mead. He also has many beautiful nieces and nephews.
Harold’s wife and daughter would like to acknowledge the wonderful compassion and sensitivity of the staff at the Joan Nicole Prince Home and Schenectady Hospice.
Funeral services were held on February 9 at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Heldeburg Avenue, Rotterdam. Burial will be at Saratoga Veterans Cemetery in Saratoga at a later date.
