German-American Club awards scholarships

Two area students who had been awarded $500 scholarships by the German-American Club of the Northern Catskills, Inc. in June were invited to meet the club members at meetings over the summer.
Benjamin Young from Oneonta High School and Justine Dechow from Downsville High School were presented with certificates of merit for their achievements. Both wrote informative essays on three German-Americans who had contributed to American society. Benjamin, who also studied German for three years, will major in psychology at Drew University in Madison, NJ while Justine will study nursing at Hartwick College in Oneonta.
The students expressed their delight in being chosen and both promised to put the money to good use. The members in turn were glad to see that their fund-raising efforts were well rewarded. Scholarship applications are sent to nine area high schools each January and must be submitted by May. The study of German is not required.
The club’s next fund-raiser is its ninth-annual Oktoberfest at Belleayre’s Discovery Lodge scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. General meetings are held at the Arkville Firehall on the second Sunday of each month at 11 a.m. Visitors are always welcome.
