Frank A. Hartung, 67, of Andes, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2009, at his residence.
He was born April 1, 1942 in Jueterbog, Germany.
He married Doris Morschhauser on May 15, 1973, in Astoria, Queens.
He moved to Andes in 1995 from Astoria.
Frank was raised in East Germany and escaped over the Berlin Wall at the age of 19. After emigrating to the United States, he was drafted into the United States Army in 1966 and served during the Vietnam war. He served with the 9th Division as an infantryman. He received the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal. After his discharge in 1968, he attended the New York City Police Academy and served as a police officer and then a detective for 26 years.
Frank was active in community affairs, serving on the Andes Gazette, the Andes Society for History and Culture, Tremperskill Hunting and Fishing Club and the Andes Library. He was a member of the Delaware County Shields Association.
Frank is survived by his wife of 36 years, Doris Hartung.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wed., July 29 at the Hynes Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Ballard officiating.
Burial with military honors will be in Shavertown Cemetery in Andes.
