Fleischmanns Street Fair planned for Saturday, May 29
Fleischmanns — This Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday May 29, Fleischmanns will once again host a village-wide celebration worthy of its festive history as a gateway to summertime fun in the Catskills. On Saturday, May 29, the entire Main Street will be bustling with vendors and tag sales, vintage baseball in the Wagner Avenue ballpark, the season opening of the Museum of Memories, and Skene Library’s annual book sale. Grownups and kids alike can enjoy old-fashioned horse carriage rides, too.
Music and entertainment will be emceed by singer Cat Blume from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., including Hilt and Stella Kelly with square dancing at the gazebo and Dell’s Belles tap dancers. Terry De will be teaching and leading line dancing. There’s even more mountain music by The Catskills Mountain Boys and Connie Mohar and Jeanne Palmer on accordion and fiddle.
Fleischmanns’ Main Street will be lined with vendors and organizations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., hawking everything from antiques and handmade furniture to maple syrup, honey and specialty foods, artists’ wares, clothing, jewelry and crafts, including chimes, birdhouses, totebags, metalworks and much more.
In the historic ballpark, the 1895-style vintage Mountain Athletic Club will host two games at 2 and 4 p.m. with neighboring rivals the Roxbury Nine and the Bovina Dairymen.
If you’d like to take in some history, too, there’s a self-guided walking tour brochure of Fleischmanns available at Skene Library, which hosts its biggest fund-raiser of the year, its annual book sale, while the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories opens its season with displays of recent acquisitions and a special exhibit this year on Fleischmanns’ postal history.
And what would Memorial Day be without Karl Von Hassel’s famous fire department chicken barbecue? The grill will be firing up on Main Street with its irresistible savory aroma (and the chickens!) to fortify hordes of hungry shoppers and baseball fans. You can get a fix for your sweet tooth at the Fleischmanns Community Church pie and bake sale, which will support restoration work in the church.
On Monday the whole village will turn out at 9 a.m. for a truly old-fashioned Memorial Day parade. Anyone interested in participating should gather at the Fleischmanns Fire Department by 8:30 a.m.
