Fire destroys Roxbury barn; lawn mower ignited the blaze

By Brian Sweeney
A large barn outside of Roxbury was destroyed by fire Friday afternoon.

The barn was located just off Route 30, on Mac More Road, and was owned by Christie and Jason O’Donnell.

Volunteers were alerted to the call about 5:30 p.m. and the barn was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The blaze was quickly brought under control but the structure was a total loss.
Roxbury Fire Chief Allen Hinkley said the barn served as a garage for the homeowners. He said it’s believed that the fire was caused when a lawn mower, which was still hot, was put away in the barn and ignited some hay.

Chief Hinkley said the heat from the blaze resulted in a slight amount of damage to the O’Donnells’ house.

Roxbury firefighters were again called to the scene on Saturday to extinguish a rekindle when some of the hay again began burning.

Firefighters from Roxbury, Grand Gorge, Halcottsville and Margaretville responded to the scene.
