Festival Opera's 10th anniversary presentation of "Pagliacci" is August 2
“Pagliacci” and Opera Choruses will be presented as the Belleayre Festival Opera celebrates a 10th anniversary opera gala on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 8 p.m at Belleayre Mountain in Highmount. Producer and Stage Director Donald Westwood’s Belleayre Festival Opera will be joined by the Community Chorale of the Catskills, under the direction of Richard Tucker, in presenting Ruggero Leoncavallo’s most famous and popular work, “Pagliacci” (Clowns). The performance will be preceded by famous opera choruses.
A company of 60 performers and musicians, including stars of the New York City Opera and other international companies, will perform this all-new staging of Leoncavallo’s most famous and popular work in the original Italian with simultaneous translation provided via SuperTitles.
Set in Southern Italy, the story is based on actual events. With music and libretto by the composer, “Pagliacci,” is a music drama of jealousy and murder that might have been ripped from today’s headlines. The musical centerpiece of “Pagliacci” is Canio’s “Vesti la giubba,” the world’s most famous operatic aria, and the opera’s Prologue is an audience favorite worldwide.
In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Belleayre Festival Opera, the Community Chorale of the Catskills will join the company to perform great opera choruses from the past decade.
Kitty Montgomery, King-ston Daily Freeman music critic, has used the words “brilliant,” “thrilling,” and “world class” in praise of Donald Westwood’s Belleayre productions.
Mr. Westwood’s other productions have been called “exemplary” by The New York Times, “very special” by The New York Post, and “a welcome addition to this city’s music,” by New York magazine
