Family escapes from burning Arkville home
By Brian Sweeney
A house on Erpf Road, Arkville was damaged by fire on Wednesday night.
The 911 call alerted firefighters that a bed was on fire, but when volunteers arrived, they found flames coming from four windows on the first floor.
The Don Smith family occupied the house and everyone who was home managed to escape without injury. The home is part of the Erpf estate.
Arkville firefighters received mutual aid from Margaretville and Fleischmanns at the scene and the blaze was brought under control in about 15 minutes. Firefighters remained on the scene until about 1 a.m.
The downstairs bedroom, in which the fire apparently started, was completely burned and the rest of the first floor sustained heat, smoke and water damage. The second floor of the home was damaged by smoke.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Delaware County Emergency Services Department.
The Halcottsville and Pine Hill fire departments provided standby coverage.
