Ezra Birnbaum, 81, of Manhattan and Highmount, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, May 27, 2013.
We loved Ezra so much because he gave his all for everything he believed in. He had an incredible ability to understand others’ points of view.
He earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Columbia University, and worked in housing rights, welfare rights, and substance abuse counseling. He dedicated himself to community, political, and union organizing. After retiring, he developed a continuing education program for professionals in Local 1199 Health and Hospital Workers’ Union.
Ezra was known for his infectious personality, funny stories, and overall sense of humor. He loved the mountains and every blade of grass at his country home. Sharing meals and music with friends and family gave him tremendous joy.
Ezra, and the 63-year love of his life, Carol, met while on a long-distance bicycle trip in New England. Their shared love of the outdoors and many years of camping led them to build their dream house at the end of a dirt road in the Catskill Mountains.
Ezra is lovingly missed by his wife, Carol; children, Nina, Danny, Richie and wife Geeta, Lisa and husband Geovanny; grandchildren, Joel, Rachel, Naava, Ilana; and sister, Naomi and husband Jack.
Memorial celebrations of his life will be held in Manhattan on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 5 p.m. at 310 West 43 St, and in the Catskills later in the summer.
Donations in Ezra’s memory can be made to the Fleischmanns Playground Project, payable to MARK Project, PO Box 516, Arkville, NY 12406, or Honest Brook Music Festival, PO Box 309, Delhi, NY 13753.
