Ellen Mae Bowie, 81, a resident of Gilboa, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.
Ellen was born on June 12, 1931 in Gilboa, the daughter of Sweeting Miles and Hazel (Brownell) Kohler. She married William Bowie on June 15, 1951 in Brooklyn. He died in May of 2006.
She worked as a telephone operator for New York Telephone and as a paraprofessional for special needs visually handicapped children at Public School 90 in Richmond Hills. She received her associate’s degree at Queensborough Community College at Bayside.
She loved being outdoors enjoying nature, walking, and gardening.
Ellen is survived by her children, William Bowie Jr., Susan Kliza, and Miles Bowie; grandchildren, Jessie, Sarah, Hannah, Susan Kliza, Evan, Deana, Lizzie, John, and Michael Bowie, and great-grandchildren, Faith, Titus, Nehemiah, Gabriel Kliza and Lepharoah Longmire. Her brothers, Miles Kohler, and Karl Kohler and a sister, Marie Talarico also survive.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Margie Brainerd and Betty Underwood and a brother, Lewis Kohler.
Calling hours will be held at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury on Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7 at the Catskill Mountain Christian Center in Margaretville with Pastor Robert Englehardt officiating.
A committal service will be held in the spring at the Gilboa Rural Cemetery.
