Edith Sanchis

Edith P. Sanchis, a longtime resident of Pine Hill, passed away on February 5 in New York City. She was 94. Mrs. Sanchis was born on January 17, 1919 in Añasco, Puerto Rico, one of an extended family of seven sisters. In the 1920’s, she and her family moved to New York City where they lived in Spanish Harlem.

Mrs. Sanchis and her husband, Frank, who met at the Hollywood Hotel in Highmount, moved to Pine Hill in 1944.  They owned and operated a boarding house called Lakeside Lodge and a nightclub called El Casino, catering to a Spanish clientele for many years. In the late 1950’s Mr. Sanchis established and operated the Pine Hill Press.

Following Mr. Sanchis’ death in 1963 in an automobile accident, Mrs. Sanchis matriculated at SUNY Teachers College. She graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Education, and went on to teach for 20 years at the Greenburgh Middle School in Hartsdale, New York. During those years, she studied  abroad extensively in Spain, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Italy, earning a Master’s Degree as well as completing all of her coursework towards a PhD.

After her retirement Mrs. Sanchis, an avid traveler, enjoyed many trips with her mother, Lorenza, to whom she was devoted. When her grandchildren, Nellie and Charles were born in 1978 and 1980, she moved to Peekskill to be near her son, Frank, her daughter-in-law, Jane, and their family. In 2004, she moved to Deerfield Beach, Florida where she lived until 2010 when she returned to New York City.

Always considered by her friends and family to be a “live wire,” Mrs. Sanchis possessed a spirited personality. She loved to dance, go out on the town, see new places, and tell jokes. She is famously remembered by her grandchildren for teaching them to play poker. Her warm personality and unflagging energy garnered her a wide circle of friends, with whom she always kept in touch, and who are left with many fond memories of her.
