Dec. 9, 2009: Candidate wanted to take a stand

To The Editor:
Last week, the New York State Senate finally debated and voted on the marriage equality bill. Senator Bonacic ignored this community and voted to defeat this bill. Many of us have spoken to his staff throughout the spring and summer asking him to stand up for the values of our country—freedom and equality for all—and support this bill. He tried to avoid taking a stand, and when finally forced to vote, he took the politically safe path. He voted with every other Republican to defeat this bill. It appears he is more concerned about the intramural in-fighting in Albany than he is about the rights of the members of this community.
It appears that we need new representation. I urge a progressive leader to run against our incumbent Senator. I will actively work on your campaign.
