Daniel Cohen

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, the world lost a great man. Daniel Cohen was a teacher, coach and family man in Margaretville for decades. He was a man who helped to shape the lives of countless people and will continue to do so for many years to come.

A native of Queens, NY, Daniel always knew what he wanted. When he was only 13 years old he met and fell in love with Kathryn Knapp. Not many years later, they married and went to college together as young newlyweds. After graduating from Oneonta State College in 1972, he became an elementary schoolteacher at Margaretville Central School. There he spent his entire career doing what he loved, educating young minds.

He enjoyed many hobbies including chess, photography, music, as well as being an avid sportsman and hunter. He and Kathryn loved and raised Newfoundland dogs and spent much of their time traveling to and participating in dog shows. Both of them served as officers in the Northland Newfoundland Club.

Daniel had a lifelong passion for sports. He had the good fortune and considered it an honor to coach the M.C.S. girls’ state soccer championship.

He was highly respected by all who knew him, and his enthusiasm for life was evident in his good-natured sense of humor and the smile he always had on his face.

As a family man, he was not only devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren, but also instrumental in caring for his aging parents.

Daniel’s passing will leave a hole in many hearts, but especially for his loving family.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Cohen; mother, Terry Cohen; son, and his wife, Zebadiah and Amber Cohen; grandchildren, Cooper and Sophia Cohen; daughter, and her partner, Rebecca Cohen and Andy Hromyak; sister, Deborah Cohen; nephews, Dejon and Joneb Hamann and families and a great uncle, Wilbur Knapp.

Even in his passing, Daniel is making a difference. By being an organ donor, over 300 people will benefit from his generosity, which should serve to inspire others to also become organ donors.
His family asks all those who knew Daniel to visit the Daniel Cohen Memorial Facebook page where you can share stories and pictures of Daniel.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations in memory of Daniel be made to any of the following: Margaretville Emergency Squad, 42084 State Hwy 28, Margaretville, NY 12455; Margaretville Fire Department, 77 Church St., Margaretville, NY 12455; Hospice of Delaware County, 6 Court St., Delhi, NY 13753 or the Northland Newfoundland Club Rescue Fund, c/o Helen Mancuso, 227 Roaser Rd., Sand Lake, NY 12153.
