Cool Latin jazz featured at Belleayre; Tango and Bossa Nova stars featured
Highmount — Two nights of cool Latin jazz will kick off the Catskill Mountain Jazz Series at the Belleayre Music Festival on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 7 and 8. Pablo Ziegler and the Trio for Nuevo Tango (The New Tango) will get the series started in sultry style on Friday, Aug. 7 at 8 p.m.
Magical Queen of the Bossa Nova, Leny Andrade follows on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 8 p.m. Known as the Ella Fitzgerald of Brazil, Andrade has been wowing audiences with her vocal prowess for more than four decades.
Pianist Pablo Ziegler is currently the world’s leading exponent of Nuevo Tango, thanks to the skills and reputation he gathered while working extensively with Argentina’s most famous Tango composer, Astor Piazzolla in the 1980s.
His playing style, both sharply percussive and metallically lyrical, is instantly recognizable and bears some similarities to that of Vladimir Horowitz as well as some of the wistfulness of Bill Evans.
In 1985 Ziegler composed the music for the film “Adios Roberto.”
Leny Andrade has long been regarded as Brazil’s best jazz singer and interpreter of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. She built this stellar reputation on her outstanding improvisational abilities. During the 1980s and 1990s, she divided time between her native country and the U.S., where she enhanced her status with several samba-jazz records, including classics like “Luz Neon.”
At this performance she will be backed by two of Brazil’s most famous musicians: guitarist supreme, Romero Lubambo, and the brilliant pianist, Cesar Camargo Mariano.
Belleayre Festival goers will remember the raucous standing ovation the duo received at the Festival’s 2001 Jobim tribute.
The Catskill Mountain Jazz Series continues on Friday, Aug. 14 at 8 p.m. with jazz crooner Kevin Mahogany in a tribute to Johnny Hartman.
Jay Leno’s Band Leader, Guitarist Kevin Eubanks and his Quintet wrap up the 2009 jazz series on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 8 p.m.
All four shows in the Catskill Mountain Jazz Series will be held in the intimate confines of the Belleayre Jazz Club.
Upcoming shows include: Saturday, Aug. 22 – 8 p.m., Bob Marley’s band The Original Wailers; Sunday, Aug. 23 at 1 p.m., KIDSTOCK featuring Uncle Rock and the Playthings with special guests Paul Green’s School of Rock (free admission); Saturday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m., Mary Wilson of the Supremes; Saturday, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m., ABBA— The Tour.
