Chill out Saturday in Andes

Andes — The heat wave is over! Come and cool down in way cool Andes on Andes Community Day this Saturday, Aug. 13.

Activities start with a pancake breakfast at the firehall from 7 to 9 a.m. followed by a parade down Main Street at 10:30. The wonderful down-home traditions of hayrides, fiddlers all over town, vendors on the school grounds, lawn sales everywhere, the, horseshoe tournament (at 1 p.m. at the Weather Tite Barn on Redden Lane), beautiful baby and pet contests, continue.

Much is new, too. This year Just Throw Money will be playing at the Andes Hotel Summershack during the afternoon. There will be a DEP police dog demonstration at noon, a juggler will perform and show you how at Bohlman Park.

Event schedules, showing time and location, will be all over town, as will terrific food, outdoor eating and, of course, the one-of-a-kind shops and galleries.

If we have to eat our words and there is another heat wave, remember there is ice cream at Woody’s and Hogan’s, a watermelon eating contest at 3 p.m., the outdoor swimming pool is open to all, and shady, stream-lined Ballantine park is a stroll away.
