Chi Tan Liu

Retired chemist and businesswoman Chi Tan Liu died on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville, surrounded by the love of her family and nursing-home staffers. She was 92 years old.

A Mountainside resident since February 2004, she leaves behind her daughters, Pauline and Betty, her granddaughters, Alana and Gabrielle, and her son-in-law, Joe Moskowitz.

Chi Tan was raised in pre-Communist China’s capital city of Beijing, where her father ran the country’s leading military academy. In 1935, when she was 17, her parents sent her to study chemistry at the University of Liege in Belgium. After completing her undergraduate degree, she moved to France where she earned her Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Lyon. Soon after, she met her future husband, Sien Wei Liu, who changed her life by bringing her to America.

Committal services for Chi Tan Liu will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 at the All Faiths Lutheran Cemetery in Middle Village. Chi Tan LiuChi Tan LiuArrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
