Cemetery work to be discussed this Saturday

Margaretville — A meeting of Friends of Middletown Cemeteries will be held Saturday, March 14 at 10 a.m. in the Community Room of Fairview Public Library, 43 Walnut St., Margaretville. The discussion will include inventory and restoration projects for 2009.
“Friends” is an informal group of people interested in exploring, restoring and preserving cemeteries, grave markers and their inscriptions. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting and get involved in projects.
An important undertaking for this year will be to assist American Legion Post #216 in identifying and marking with flags every veteran’s grave in the Town of Middletown in time for Memorial Day.
“The Legion has been dedicated to recognizing our departed veterans for many decades,” explained Andy Rosa, post commander. “We intend to continue to do so, but we would certainly welcome help from the community.”
Friends volunteer Gary Atkin has already mapped Margaretville and Sanford Cemeteries, pinpointing the graves of more than 200 veterans. He is currently working on a map of veteran graves in the Margaretville Cemetery Annex.
If you or your organization would like to be part of this important commemorative effort by identifying and/or placing flags on vets’ graves at a cemetery near you, please come to the meeting or e-mail us at history@catskill.net.
The Friends group also hopes to begin to repair several broken monuments and otherwise restore Arkville Cemetery on the Arkville Cut-off Road. HSM gratefully acknowledges initial funding provided by the Town of Middletown for this project.
Bring your suggestions for other projects to the March 14 meeting. In case of questionable weather, call Diane at 845 586-4973 to see if the meeting has been postponed.
