Catskills Cup action exciting on and off the court

Fleischmanns — Top-notch competition and off-the-court festivities were the order of the weekend at the second annual Catskills Cup Tennis Tournament on July 30-August 1 in Fleischmanns.

After Saturday’s competition, Wojciech “Rudy” Rogawski of Highmount was inducted into the Fleischmanns Tennis Hall of Fame.

On the court, several matches were suspended due to rain, but some winners were crowned before the weather stopped cooperating.

In Mixed Doubles, Peter and Meredith Barcia earned the championship trophy with a victory over Agnes Janis and Michal Zakar.

In Men’s Doubles, Paul Gorzula and Jacek Krzeminski successfully defended their title with a win over Andrzej and Mariusz Mikulec.

The Men’s 55+ competition was suspended with Andrzej Janiank leading Michael Ladissa, 6-3, 1-0.
The Men’s Singles championship between Ladissa and Paul Gorzula was also postponed due to inclement weather. Both of the suspended matches will be played on Saturday, Aug. 14.
The weekend-long festivities got underway on Friday with an all-day free tournament for junior players 18 years and younger. In late afternoon, the park was transformed into a community festival with a barbecue and a free outdoor concert.Frank Nielsen returns a shot during play in the Catskills Cup Tennis TournamentFrank Nielsen returns a shot during play in the Catskills Cup Tennis Tournament
